I first contacted Theo Parrish in 1997. I was starting the Archive label and i wanted to get him for a 12" on the label, so I called the phone number i found on one of the first Sound Signature releases. He answered the phone pretty amused by a phone call from Italy, a country he knew well because of the 'italo imports' he discovered in his Chicago days. We talked few times on the phone and when in may 1999 i was in New York for a short holiday he suggested to come over to visit him in Detroit. There we planned the 'that day'/'how i feel' release for Archive and hanged out in record stores diggin. At that moment i was also working on a Blackbyrds remix project that got never finalized, but talkin about 'classics' he mentioned how much he loved Tullio De Piscopo's 'stop bajon' and that he would have loved to rework it.
Years later, I think around 2006, I mentioned this to Pierangelo Mauri from Archive/Di Più and he said he knew Tullio since the 80s. We got in contact with him, got his enthusiastic go ahead and even some parts [wich werent the original parts anyway and sounded way different from the original song]. Theo was officially on board for a reinterpretation and I was going to do an edit of the original.
After few months Theo did his version but it got unfortunately lost because of a powercut and for some time I thought the project was never gonna see the light of day.
Last winter i met him in Torino for one of his gigs and i reminded him again about our 'stop bajon' project and encouraged him to get back on it.....out of the blue few months later the 'Theo Parrish translation' version arrived on cd.
Now when I was sure all was fine and Tullio would have been happy about the project, he changed idea and didnt give the go ahead. Being Theo's version not a remix but a complete personal reinterpretation we opted for a 12' of cover versions. This way I had to forget to use the edit of the original that I did and I went for a full cover of the original myself.
While in the studio preparing the beats I remembered how much Mark de Clive-Lowe loved the original and asked him if he could find the time to do the keys for me. Well, not only he was happy to be part of this project but he put some real passion in it [not to mention the amazing skills] and created a vibe close to the original yet totally fresh.....in a couple of weeks we had our Isoul8 & Mark de Clive-Lowe 'stop bajon' cover ready.
Now, after 4 years, I'm counting the days before the vinyl release....hope you'll all enjoy this labour of love!!!
