5th of July .... in verona, I'll be there baby!! and it's gonna be Hotter than (all) July ever!!!

In 2005 Kanye West reflected on his own success, saying simply: "I'm not trying to compete with what's out there now. I'm really trying to compete with 'Innervisions' and 'Songs In The Key Of Life'. It sounds musically blasphemous to say something like that, but why not set that as your bar?" Keep trying, Kanye.

roy ayers live & documentary vol.1... only available in japan... damn!!#@ (thanks zaid for the tip!)

here's an autopsy of a classic:

...after four bars of establishing the groove, the first of many vocal chants enters with the song's mantra: "Do-be-doo, run run run." Hand claps on the second and fourth beats also make an appearance, adding an almost surprising buoyancy to the rhythm. The first lyrics enter at 0:44, sung by a predominantly female chorus, and describe a one-sided relationship: "'Cause you've been mean to me, and I've been good to you, and I've been oh so true." The content is secondary to the rhythm of the words, the way the syllables edge into the groove in a polyrhythmic fashion. Ayers begins to sing at 1:33, but his cycle of silence every two bars gives the impression of confused, half-completed thoughts, those of a man unable to comprehend the reasons of a failing relationship. At 2:24 the chorus returns, and Ayers chants mournfully in the background: "I'm running away."

in sync - storm (irdial 027, 1992)

thanks to mr memoryman, for pulling out this early gem from his records boxes.
the following comment comes from Lee In Sync himself, on the music released on "Storm":

"There are only 4 instruments in the track - all Roland, 2 SH-101s, 1 TR-808 and 1 TR-909. There was no hardware sequencer either. Everything was synched using the drum machine triggers. The notes were recorded on the SH-101 onboard sequencers, so the tune was very limited. Also, one of the SH-101s was not working properly. I could not record the same note twice in the sequencer for some reason. You can't really set up a more basic studio than I used for that track. The track was a production nightmare in reality. I am surprised it ever made it to vinyl. There is tape noise on the recording where the cassette deck level was way to low. But....it does sound like rain. It all went wrong but ended up right it seems".
